Begin with the mainland approach
Pärnu suits a southern approach to Saaremaa. Haapsalu suits a Hiiumaa crossing through Rohuküla. The first mainland night can protect an early ferry without making the route feel like dead time.

Give Saaremaa two or three nights
Use Kuressaare as a service base, then choose one coast or countryside direction per day. Avoid a full-island loop immediately after the ferry.

Give Hiiumaa two or three nights
Choose Kärdla, the west or the ferry side according to the route. The island is dispersed enough that changing bases rarely saves time on a first visit.

Verify the inter-island sailing
The Sõru to Triigi connection can define the sequence, but it is not an evergreen daily guarantee. If it does not suit, return via the mainland rather than forcing a brittle plan.
Which island first?
Choose Saaremaa when you want Kuressaare as a clear town base with day trips into the countryside. Choose Hiiumaa when the slower, more dispersed island route is the point of the trip. Neither island needs to be completed as a loop for the visit to count.
For fewer than five island nights, pick one island. With five or more, a two-island route can work if the Sõru-Triigi sailing fits the actual dates.
Book the route in the right order
Check the inter-island sailing first, then the mainland crossings, then accommodation. If the Sõru-Triigi service does not fit, return through the mainland rather than forcing a fragile same-day chain. For vehicle bookings, make sure the ticket includes the vehicle and every traveller, including the driver.
