Kärdla

Use Kärdla for practical arrival, meals and a sense of contemporary island life. It is a base rather than a substitute for the coast, so plan one direction per day.

Kõpu and the west

The lighthouse and western coast fit naturally together. Check opening information for interiors, but let the forest and shoreline carry the route even when a tower is closed.

Tahkuna and the north

The northern peninsula is another separate circuit. Avoid joining it with the far west and Sõru in one hurried day simply because the island looks small on a national map.

Sõru and the south

Sõru matters most when the route continues to or from Saaremaa. Treat the ferry as a fixed planning point only after verifying the seasonal schedule.

Getting there and getting around

The main ferry runs between Rohuküla on the mainland and Heltermaa. A separate connection can link Sõru with Triigi on Saaremaa. Frequency varies, so use the operators' live schedules.

A car is the most flexible way to connect dispersed island sights. Without one, build the trip around Kärdla, known bus services, cycling ability or a pre-arranged tour rather than assuming spontaneous transfers.

How the seasons change the visit

Summer offers the broadest visitor services and the most competition for ferry space on busy dates.
