Rail and coach options can change through works, seasonal schedules and operator decisions. Use the operator for the actual date and avoid a tight same-day connection after a ferry or flight.
What changed in 2026
A regular Tallinn-Tartu-Riga train service began on 12 January 2026. Rail can now be a practical Tallinn-Riga choice, but works and timetable changes on the Riga-Vilnius section still make the live Elron journey planner essential. Coaches remain a direct alternative and may suit a different departure time or city location.
Compare the whole journey, not only the hours on board. A hotel-to-station transfer, luggage and a fixed check-in can erase the apparent advantage of the fastest option.
Seven days or ten?
Seven days means two nights in each capital plus one travel buffer, which is a sampler. Nine or ten days allow three nights in at least two capitals and protect a full day from becoming a transfer day. If one city matters more, give it the extra night instead of dividing the route for symmetry.
